Sesquicentennial book available

By Barbara Griswold Laederach

The Plymouth sesquicentennial history book, Walking Together in All God’s Ways, is available for purchase. Dave Kenney, noted Minnesota historian and author of several important books about Minnesota places and faces, has written an exciting and colorful book. He researched thoroughly, using our church archives and the Minnesota History Center archives and records.

The many photographs of the church, its people and events came from several sources. Dave worked with Jim Thompson, former church archivist, and others to find the facts and pictures that make this book wonderful. Cathy Spengler, the book designer, has created one of the most beautiful books seen by the Canadian firm that printed it.

A premier evening event was held to debut the book on Oct. 12, 2006. Other book-signing events were held later that month. A CD of the music and voices of Plymouth, including congregational hymn-singing, will be given to every book purchaser. Philip Brunelle has brought the sounds of Plymouth to us all in this way. Our past comes alive through the warmth and surprising stories that Kenney has written about our years since the church was founded in April 1857. Each of the senior ministers who served Plymouth through 150 years is highlighted.

People of Plymouth have walked together in all God’s ways for 150 years. Each and every member today is part of that journey. Some of the pathways have been of great tragedy and most have influenced the community of Minneapolis as well. The journey has changed with the times, but it makes a fascinating and inspirational story.

The book can be purchased through the church office on weekdays. We hope each member and friend who experiences Plymouth now will read the book and wonder about the people who came before us and made the church what we love today. The book comes in softcover ($34.95) or special edition hardcover ($250). (Add $5 per book if ordering by mail.)

This project, made possible by the Plymouth Sesquicentennial Campaign, took more than two years of dedicated work by the book committee. Many other members contributed rich memories of life at Plymouth, through interviews and writings. We wish each of you a great read and a treasure for years to come.
